Tailor-made inlays and onlays can repair teeth with larger cavities. They are both strong and aesthetically appealing, and offer a less invasive option as more of the healthy tooth is retained.
An inlay is placed within a tooth, whereas an onlay is applied over the chewing surface. They are custom-made to fit a prepared cavity and then fixed securely in place. They are normally made from natural-looking resin or porcelain to blend in with your teeth, but can also be made from gold.
A dental technician produces custom-made inlays or onlays from impressions taken of your teeth. To protect the prepared tooth while you wait for your restoration, a temporary filling will be placed in the cavity. When ready, your inlay or onlay will be fixed firmly in place with a dental adhesive.
Inlays and onlays can be produced in just one visit using a CEREC in-surgery milling machine. This cuts down the number of appointments required and eliminates the need for a temporary restoration.
