Jaw problems

Aligning your bite and protecting your teeth

If your upper and lower jaws do not bite together properly, it can create problems for your teeth and gums, your temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) and the muscles in your face. TMJ disorder can lead to clenching of the jaw and grinding of the teeth, known as bruxism. This can cause facial pain, headaches, clicking when chewing, as well as pain in the neck, shoulder or back.

Treatment for badly aligned jaws and bruxism can include:

  • Wearing a custom-made appliance which relaxes the jaw muscles and also helps prevent tooth wear
  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Maxillofacial surgery
  • Replacing missing teeth
  • Rectifying badly fitting bridgework
